Apple announced new iPhones, the two new flag high-end phones are called the iPhone XS (pronounced “ten S”) and the iPhone Xs Max. Here’s everything we learned today about the new hardware!
With the iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max a few days away from release, users are dying to get as much details about the new phones as possible. Today, SpeedSmart, a service that lets you test your wireless connection speed, has posted its initial tests of LTE speeds across the three major U.S. carriers, on the new set of iPhones.
Most interestingly, SpeedSmart tests the iPhone XS up against the outgoing iPhone X. From the first round of tests, it looks like the iPhone XS has massive gains against its predecessor, the iPhone X.
For those unaware, it may look like Apple has finally cracked the code on wireless networking. However, this is simply due to the fact that Apple has added 4×4 MIMO to their iPhone XS line of phones. This technology has been available on Android handsets for quite sometime, and it’s nice seeing Apple finally joining the club.
The outgoing iPhone X, iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus, and even the upcoming iPhone XR only include 2×2 MIMO. This means you unfortunately won’t see these improvements, even in the upcoming iPhone XR, unless you have the iPhone XS or XS Max.
Aside from 4×4 MIMO, the new iPhone XS and XS Max also gain support for QAM and LAA, which are other radio technologies that will help improve speed and range on the new phones.
Apple’s iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max are set to release this Friday, alongside the new Apple Watch Series 4. Are you picking up any new gear this Friday?
iPhone XS has a 5.8-inch OLED display and the iPhone XS Max has a 6.5-inch OLED display, meaning the iPhone Xs Max is larger; however, other than that, there is no difference between the two new phones on the inside.
One notable difference is the battery. The iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max are both going to outperform last year’s iPhone X when it comes to battery life, but the iPhone XS Max does have a bigger battery than the smaller iPhone XS.
Specs
Here are some main specs of the iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max
Battery life
Apple states that the iPhone XS will last up to 30 mins longer than the iPhone X, while the bigger iPhone XS Max is quoted as lasting 1.5 hours longer than the iPhone X from last year.
The Insides
The iPhone Xs and iPhone XS Max use the new A12 Bionic chip. Both phones have a 6-core CPU and a 4-core GPU, both of which are faster and more powerful than iPhone X from last year.
The Camera
The iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max both come with a dual camera system on the back that consists of an f1.8 12MP wide-angle lens and an f2.4 12MP telephoto lens. The cameras have new and upgraded sensors over the iPhone X last year and Apple claims it will produce pictures with greater detail and sharpness.
The same front-facing selfie camera that was on the iPhone X is back on the iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max. The selfie cam is a 7MP camera with an f2.2 aperture that can record 1080p video and Portrait Mode photos as well!
The new A12 Bionic chip has a new feature Apple calls SmartHDR, which is able to produce HDR photos in faster and with much better detail and exposure.
Plus, the Portrait Mode can not only let you apply lightning filters, but the iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max will let you adjust the depth of the photo with a slider in the edit screen. This will allow you to take a photo and adjust the level of blur in the background!
The Video
The video capabilities are the same as the last year’s iPhone X, meaning you can expect the iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max to have the following video specs:
- 4K video recording at 24 fps, 30 fps or 60 fps
- 1080p HD video recording at 30 fps or 60 fps
- 720p HD video recording at 30 fps
- Optical image stabilization for video
- Slo‑mo video support for 1080p at 120 fps or 240 fps
Apple says that with the new A12 Bionic chip combined with the new sensors in the cameras on the back will provide better low-light video and performance.
Features
It’s joined by a model with a 6.5-inch Super Retina OLED screen, which Apple calls the iPhone XS Max. The resolution is increased to 2,688 x 1,242 pixels and matches the iPhone XS’s 458ppi density. The new models come in gold, silver, and space grey, and the body has an IP68 water-resistance rating. The glass is also new, with a higher durability rating. Like the iPhone X, Apple calls this the iPhone 10, with the X being a Roman numeral.
Each is powered by a new version of Apple’s A-series processor — the A12 Bionic. It contains a dizzying 6.9 billion transistors, can process 5 trillion operations each second, and has up to 512GB of storage memory. The A12 Bionic is a six-core CPU with two dedicated to high-performance tasks, and is 15 percent faster and has 40 percent lower power consumption than the previous generation. The four remaining cores are for efficiency and consume 50 percent less power.
The iPhone XS has new cameras. The main six-element lens has a new 12-megapixel, wide-angle sensor with an f/1.8 aperture, optical image stabilization, and a 1.4nm pixel size. The second telephoto lens also has 12 megapixels with OIS, a 2x optical zoom, and an f/2.4 aperture. The front camera has a new 7-megapixel RGB sensor with an f/2.2 aperture, plus an IR camera and a structured light transmitter for Face ID and animojis. For video, the front camera shoots 1080p at 60fps with video stabilization.
Smart HDR is a new camera feature that goes a step beyond the HDR mode we’re already familiar with. Here, multiple images are captured almost instantly, at the same time, and all at different exposures, shadow levels, and more. The software and new A12 Bionic chip merge them into one photo for the best results. Apple has also improved the bokeh blurred background effect, which is helped by the A12 Bionic chip, and there is a new depth setting to change the level of blur in the background. This is activated using a slider in the camera app.
Apple has boosted the iPhone XS battery life. You’ll get 30 minutes more time from the iPhone X on the iPhone XS, and 90 minutes more from the iPhone XS Max. Apple has not disclosed the capacity of the batteries at this time. Apple also says it has improved the wireless charging but has not gone into detail about how.
Other features include Gigabit-class LTE and dual-SIM with dual-standby technology. This uses eSIM, just like the iPad and Apple Watch, so there is no need to put in an extra physical SIM. In China, the eSIM option won’t be offered; instead, a traditional dual-SIM phone will be sold. The phones will also have Bluetooth 5.0, wider stereo sound from the speakers and stereo recording for video.

Face ID
Security made simple.
Face ID reinvented the way we unlock, log in, and pay. Some of our most sophisticated technologies — the TrueDepth camera system, the Secure Enclave, and the Neural Engine — make it the most secure facial authentication ever in a smartphone. And even faster and easier to use.
Adaptive recognition. Face ID uses advanced machine learning to recognize changes in your appearance. Wear a hat. Put on glasses. It even works with many types of sunglasses.
Do more with a glance. Face ID does so much more than unlock your iPhone. So you can forget about typing user names and passwords. Now all it takes is a look.
Unlock in an instant. The advanced Secure Enclave and new algorithms make Face ID even faster. So you’ll love it even more.
Log in to your apps and accounts. Face ID works with the apps you already use — from banking and health apps to locked notes and private documents.
